Applications
Femoral Head
Adequate blood perfusion is required for bone healing / knitting processes and laser Doppler is an established technique for the monitoring of blood flow in bone (Nötzli et al, 2002). In areas where the blood supply is limited to a few vessels, such as the femoral head, laser Doppler has been shown to give optimal perfusion measurements and used to estimate microcirculatory compromise (Sugamoto et al, 1998).
High power laser Doppler used in combination with wide separation probes (uniquely offered by moorVMS-LDF1-HP and VP7BS-HP) enables a larger volume of bone to be sampled when compared to standard laser Doppler systems. Sampling a larger volume aids improved signal-to-noise ratio whilst also reducing site to site variation. The monitoring of perfusion in the femoral head can be useful for many reasons including, but not limited to, during surgical dislocation of the hip (Nötzli et al, 2002) or during femoral head resurfacing arthroplasty (Amarasekera et al, 2008).
The combination of the high power moorVMS-LDF1-HP, specifically designed bone probe and dedicated moorVMS-PC software are ideally suited to this application.
Equipment Required
- VP7BS-HP Needle Probe for intraosseous and surface measurements of blood flow with dimensions:
- Diameter = 3.3 mm
- Probe length = Various (available from 30 mm to 150 mm)
- Fibre separation = 2.15 mm
- moorVMS-PC Windows Software
